Abstract

Slavery is an act or situation that makes someone a slave. This  situation or practice can still be find Sumba Island, the act occured to be done by the maramba (noble class society) against the ata (slave/poor class society). The practice of slavery rises to injustice, oppression, violence and even human rights violations. This article aims to see the extent of the role of the Sumba Christian Church Synod (GKS) as an agent of liberation (change) in an effort to reject the practice of slavery carried out by the Maramba people against the Ata people in Sumba. By using qualitative methods and theo-ethical approaches from Gustavo Gutiereez and Richard Rorty, namely liberation theology and solidarity ethics, it was found that the role of the GKS Synod was not optimal in fighting for or rejecting slavery, so this practice still continues to occur in Sumba. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation and in-depth interviews. The conclusion of this research shows that the GKS Synod needs to play an active role in rejecting all practices of slavery in Sumba so as to create a just life, free from oppression, violence and human rights violations.
